Proper Stretching Technique

It is essential to practice proper stretching techniques. Doing so will allow you to avoid any unnecessary injury.

The one aspect that must be included is that they only work if you do them and do them on a fairly consistent basis.

  • Warm up first There is a saying that even you can even bend steel if it is hot enough.  Warm-ups help to prevent your risk of pulled muscles. Warm-ups can be done by just walking and moving your arms about or just marching in place.  I recommend about five minutes of warm-up activities.
  • Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds or 5 slow breaths. Hold your stretches for at least 30 seconds to 60 seconds.  The key here is to try to hold the stretch long enough to where you have relaxed into the stretch.  You can hold the stretch for several minutes if you wish.
  • Don't bounce Bouncing as you stretch can damage your muscles. The end result can be tighter muscles.
  • Work to find your pain-free edge. Stretch to where you feel a pull but not pain.  It is that fine edge of doing enough to produce a stretch but not so much that you damage the muscle.  Pain is our guide.
  • Relax and breathe freely. Visualize yourself lengthening as you inhale and then relax into the stretch as you exhale.   Let your breath bring you into your stretch.
