Neck pain in Asheville NC
Did you see this article in the New York Times in January 2012? "For Neck Pain, Chiropractic and Exercise are Better Than Drugs."
If not I wanted to highlight some of the information from the article as to what they found from reviewed a scientific study. My goal is to help bring lite to the options that many individuals are faced with. Neck pain is a common problem for many individuals. How to treat this is another common issue that we hear from our patients. Medications are a common choice as they are easy to reach for and can provide some temporary relief. The sad thing is that it does not and will not address the cause of the pain nor the effects of not getting the cause properly corrected. It is true that medications are very useful for short term care of an acute pain. The concern is that many have chronic issues that are caused by structural issues associated with misalignment of the cervical vertebrae.
"...the new research, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, found that chiropractic care or simple exercises done at home were better at reducing pain than taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, or narcotics."
"'These changes were diminished over time, but they were still present," said Dr. Gert Bronfort, an author of the study and research professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Minnesota. 'Even a year later, there were differences between the spinal manipulation and medication groups.'"
In the study there were three groups, all of people experiencing neck pain. One group received approximately 15 chiropractic treatments over time, one group were taught exercises to perform regularly to strengthen and stretch the painful areas, while another group were regularly administered various painkilling drugs. Both the chiropractic and exercise groups at the end of the study showed marked improvement over time and were found to be significantly more recovered than those taking drugs.
It seems obvious! For neck pain, chiropractic care is a better way to address neck pain along with properly done exercises
