Healthy Aging
When you look at yourself in the mirror next time take a moment to see how you are standing. Start by standing so
you can see your whole body and then close your eyes. Just stand and notice how well you are able to remain balanced. Have something close by if you need it to avoid falling.
There are 3 things that I want to address with all of my patients. One of the most important ones is keeping a healthy balance in life. This is not just about being able to stand on one foot with your eyes closed for 30 seconds. It is about finding the balance in your life for you, your family, and your work. They are all essentials in life and finding the balance for all of them is essential in a healthy lifestyle.
Each one of these topics is a lesson by itself so let's start with what we can do with just learning to balance our bodies. The best way to learn to balance is to place our bodies in a position of having to balance on a daily basis. This can be done by standing near a wall or chair and lifting one of your legs off the floor. Now time how long you can balance before you fall. Do this with both legs. When you progress you can move one leg about like to the side, to the back and front of you. Notice how you improve by using a clock. The more we do to work on our balance the safer we will be. In our modern society, many lose the ability to balance because most of our walking surfaces are leveled for us. So our brain does not get much chance to have to adapt to unleveled surfaces. Yet when we need to be able to adapt to changing balance points if we start to fall. So start your balancing exercises and create a healthier and happier life.
Till next time!
